Heckler & Koch (HK) company in Germany developed the UMP (Universal Machinen-Pistole=Universal Submachine Gun) in the mid-1990s, and it first appeared in the market in 1999 and is inspired by USP series. It was designed to replace the MP5 and is cheaper and weighs less than the MP5. It is a lightweight and powerful submachine gun produced primarily for U.S. law enforcement and military organization, first appeared in .45ACP and .40SW chambers and later in 9mm. The UMP magazines for .45 ACP hold 10 or 25 rounds; in .40 caliber and 9mm, the magazines hold 30 rounds. The .40 caliber UMP is available for purchase in the U.S. There are three variations to the UMP: the UMP45 for .45 ACP; the UMP40 for .40 S&W; and the UMP9 for 9 x 19mm parabellum.
The HK-UMP is a blowback-operated, fixed-barrel, select-fire submachine gun, fired from the closed bolt for excellent first shot accuracy. The receiver, magazine, and folding buttstock are made of polymer, and the controls are ambidextrous. One of the unique features of the largely polymer design is less weight, for the UMP weighs 4.63 pounds when empty, and there is no damage to number of parts from corrosion. It can be fired in fully-automatic, single-shot and in 2 or 3 round burst setting from all positions - a desirable feature in submachine gun.
The UMP has bolt hold open device that traps the bolt in the open condition when the last round from magazine had been fired. It has side-folding buttstock and two sets of picatinny rails, one above the receiver, and the other on the forend. These rails can attach an array of sight and other accessories, flashlights, and laser sights. To the bottom rail, vertical foregrips can be attached for maneuverability during burst and automatic fire. The barrel has quick mount for silencer. The UMP is very safe and accurate because it fires from the closed bolt position. It is easy to maintain and assemble for cleaning and care.
