As a bolt-action rifle the Beretta 501 is manually operated, with deadly power and accuracy. It is a weapon of choice for many target shooters and snipers. In today's scenario of law enforcement, the sniper or sharpshooter needs to hit a particular part of the aggressor's body like the head or hand. Specific objects like a gun are also targeted and they need to be powerful even at shorter ranges—sometimes even less than 100 meters.

Like all bolt-action guns it has a tube of metal, in which the firing mechanism is housed. There is an integral harmonic balancer, contained within a tube hidden in the front of the stock. This heavy, free floated barrel effectively reduces vibration the barrel, and improves accuracy. Its action is much simpler, which is critical in the functioning of sniper or sports shooting.

The Beretta 501 uses a 7.62x51mm NATO specification caliber. It has a 5 round detachable box magazines. The total length is 1165 mm, and the barrel length is an unusual 586 mm or 23inches. It weighs about 5.56 kilograms or 12.2 pounds.

The Beretta 501 offers a fully adjustable iron sights with a 1.5-6x42mm Zeiss scope. It has a wooden stock; this is preferred to the more common synthetic stock. The gun is adjustable for length of pull and for position of the check-rest.

These guns first manufactured in 1985, but it is now being discontinued. It'll be replaced with Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Magnum rifles.
