In 1980 the Italian company Valtro developed the Valtro PM-5. The PM-5 is a manually operated, pump action, light, tactical shotgun. It has improved folding stock option and combines a rugged look with a high capacity magazine. It can be obtained legally in California.

The tube situated below the barrel acts as a guide for the sliding forend and as a barrel support. The plastic box magazine can hold 7 rounds, including one in the chamber. The PM-5 has a unique, detachable box magazine, unlike under-barrel tube magazines found in most pump-action shotguns. The detachable box magazine improved reload time and balance significantly. The user can complete very quick reloads with a variety of mixed loads, that is, slug to buckshot, and buckshot to birdshot.

The PM-5 is offered with plastic forend and pistol grip, and with a fixed or top-folding stock. Several different versions with shorter barrel, frontal grip and without buttstock are made to camouflage, useful for close range combat. It is preferred by security officers and bodyguards. The PM-5 is seen as uncommon among shotguns for being mag-fed.
