In the year 1987, the Remington 11-87 (misspelled sometimes as 1187) was introduced to succeed time-proven Remington model 1100 shotgun. Both models are similar in many aspects and produced in parallel, except that Remington 11-87 is stronger, for it is designed to fire 3' (76mm) magnum shells, and offers bigger effective range and firepower. It is a gas operated, semi-automatic, magazine-fed shotgun, and most widely used semi-automatic shotgun in the U.S. today.
There at least 20 hunting and sporting types of the Model 11-87 and around four police/tactical models. The police/tactical are distinguished from hunting and sporting guns by having black Parkerized metal finish, polymer stocks, comparatively short barrels and rifle-type sights. The magazine extended tube is a standard for police/tactical models. All 11-87 shotguns have rubber recoil pads on the buttstocks to decrease felt recoil.
Gas cylinder is situated around the front of the magazine tube. Annular gas piston is attached to the action by two action bars. Single locking piece facilitates the barrel locking by tilting in the vertical plane and engaging the slot in the barrel extension by locking. Barrel unlocks when the locking piece is cammed down and bolt is retracted by the gas drive to eject a spent case and to feed a fresh cartridge from the underbarrel tube magazine.
It has a bolt catch which locks the bolt in the open position when the magazine is empty. Loading of the magazine is through the opening at the bottom of the receiver, and spent cases are ejected at the right side of the receiver through a window. At the right side the cocking handle is located and is mounted on the bolt. It can be attached with different types of sights such as standard shotgun bead type, rifle-type open sights, rifle type ghost ring (diopter sight) and with various stocks made from plastic or wood. Tactical lights, laser aiming devices and scope mounts can be attached.
The Model 11-87 Sportsman gives soft-recoil and excellent handling. The Model 11-87 Sportsman series are available both in 12- and 20-guages, offers the choice of 16- or 28-inch standard contour, vent rib Remä choke barrels with choke tube and single bead sight. Durable, black synthetic stock, the matte-black metal finish, and fore-end can handle the rugged terrain. These guns come with stock and magazine cap swivel studs for Remington sling.
The Model 11-87 Police is a rugged synthetic stock and fore-end, durable parkerized metal finish, with bead, rifle or ghost ring sights options, and auto-loader. The Model 11-87 Police shotguns come with high-strength polypropylene stocks and fore-ends for added durability. These rugged parts are non-corrosive to moisture. Their matte-black avoids reflections from light. The stock has molded checking and is finished with a 1', black heavy recoil pad for best grip and comfort.
To ensure the best grip and comfort, the stock has molded checkering and is finished with a 1", black solid recoil pad. The blaze orange magazine follower allows quick, safe inspection of the chamber and magazine. It provides maximum firepower and reliability.
