Heckler & Koch's recoil-operated, double-action HK P2000 shoots both 9 mm Luger and .40 caliber S&W (alternatively 357 SIG) rounds. It is crafted from matte black, extremely corrosion resistant, nitro carburized polymer that has been further reinforced with fiber. This makes it virtually invincible in the most inhospitable conditions and helps it to maintain overall integrity where handguns made of lesser materials would surely begin to malfunction. In fact, HK Inc. refers to this particular process as the Hostile Environment Finish. The HK P2000 has been modeled on the H&K USP and USP Compact, which were first introduced by the German armament company in 1993. The USP stands for the Universal Self Loading Pistol principle that was the result of the company's intensive research and development to merge a variety of winning formulas into a single sidearm.
The HK P2000 features a Browning-type barrel and slide locks that can be operated with either hand effectively. The magazine release system is likewise designed for ambidextrous use. It is 177.8 mm long, 128 mm high and 34 mm broad. It weighs 24 ounces without the magazine, which can accommodate either 13 rounds of 9 mm caliber or 12 of the .40 S&W/ 357 SIG type. It was designed specifically for the use of European law enforcement agencies, and it has several advantages over other handguns of its kind. This includes it predecessors. For instance, it features the innovative pre-cocked hammer system. This allows for the shortest and most consistent trigger-pull length, with the trigger pull pressure being reduced to as little at 8.5 pounds. This does not change no matter how many shots are fired. The remarkably steady trigger-pull weight is up to three pounds less than other comparable handguns and increases the HK P2000's safety margin to a considerable degree. The trigger stacks just a little before breaking and gives the shooter enough indication that a round is about to be fired. The LEM (Law Enforcement Model) features an even lesser trigger-pull weight of 7.5 pounds. In all models, the extra-large trigger guard allows the pistol to be fired while wearing gloves too - an extremely progressive feature.
This ground-breaking technology does more to prevent accidental shooting than most other systems. A round that has not fired for some reason can be ejected merely by pulling the trigger a couple of times more. No manual engaging of the slide is required. This obviously translates into greater ease of use and speedier shooting. Add to this the modular grip, which features adjustable straps to make the handgun comfortable in any shooter's palm - and you have a winning design that incorporates everything that a modern small firearm should have. It is also the perfect size for police work and is completely compatible with most sidearm parameters of modern law enforcement. It costs $887, no matter which caliber is accommodates, and most buyers would state that it is eminently worth the investment. All in all, the HK P2000 is thought of as one of the most reliable duty weapons and is the perfect example of the ideal 'police pistol'.
In the HK P2000, excess recoil is effectively managed by the unique, polymer-based recoil absorber bushing. The same system is also used in one of its most famous predecessors - the HK USP Compact. Additionally, the HK P2000 can be easily fitted with a number of accessories such as laser aiming devices and tactical illumination devices, thanks to the revolutionary slide-on mounting rails provided on it. Despite this, the HK P2000 has a beautifully compact feel to it and there are no rough angles or edges to impede its retrieval from any kind of holster or place of bodily concealment. The hammer is next to unnoticeable at the rear of the slide. As a matter of fact, the HK P2000 is one of the few guns that can be used effectively by anyone at all, regardless of the user's hand dimensions or which hand is used. It is genuinely ambidextrous in design and is therefore among the most user-friendly and most quickly mastered handguns ever invented.
