In 1997 the GLOCK 28 (G28) in .380 caliber was added to the subcompact pistols family and is an ultra compact pistol. It is GLOCK 26 modified to fire the .380 ACP ammunition. G28 uses a modified slide, frame, .380 ACP barrel and magazine but otherwise is identical to GLOCK 26. It has a magazine capacity of 12 rounds. The GLOCK 28 is a blowback pistol, and there is no barrel lockup mechanism as .380 ACP ammunition does not require one. The size and format is similar to GLOCK models 26, 27 and 33. The big difference with G25 and G28 pistols and others is that both these models are blowback operated.

GLOCK pistols have a reputation for reliability and for inherent safety. A majority of police forces worldwide use GLOCK pistols, as accidental discharges are almost non-existent. The pistols use DAO trigger mechanism, a unique safety design, which unlocks three different safety devices during the trigger pull. They are built to function under extreme conditions and to fire an array of ammunition types; they are rugged in construction and have simple designs, and are easy to maintain and repair because of relatively few components.

In the U.S., GLOCK 25 or 28 pistols are not available to the general public, because they fail Gun Control Act of 1968 requirements. This failure is not because of the model manufacture defect but being a small pistol chambered for .380 ACP cartridges does not fulfill the sporting category by which imported pistols are judged. However, the GLOCK 25 and 28 are relatively popular in nations where laws do not allow possession of handguns in a common military caliber by the civilians.
