I'd like to pick up an M1 Garand in the near future. What's a good price for a well cared for original? Also, any tips on what to look for as far as condition would be greatly appreciated.

This link will take you to the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). This is a United States government program that promotes firearm safety training and rifle practice for all qualified U.S. Citizens. It has a special emphasis on youth. However, any U.S. citizen who is not legally prohibited from owning a firearm may purchase a military surplus rifle from the CMP, provided they are a member of a CMP affiliated club, which isn’t difficult to locate one near you and join. The CMP operates through a network of affiliated shooting clubs and state associations that covers every state in the U.S. The clubs and associations offer firearms safety training and marksmanship courses as well as the opportunity for continued practice and competition. I have personally fired several service grade M1 Garands obtained through this program. All shot well. One had an issue with a loose rear sight that was easily repaired. I would recommend rifles manufactured by Springfield Aromery and avoid rifles by Harrington & Richardson.

For Very good to excellent condition rifles - prices start at $950.

Excellent condition with little or no use rifles - Prices start at $1400.
Note that limited quantities of these riles still exist but are getting harder to locate through this program.

If you want to shop around at the your local dealers or gun shows expect to pay about the same. Depending on condition, I have found them as low as $600.
But it’s tough to find a Springfield at that price.

Your always welcome. The M1 is a historic rifle and good shooter.
Handles nicely and I love the unique last round 'ping'. The rifle's receiver and barrel condition is most important. A better stock can always be installed. You are looking for a bright bore and no rust. Good luck in your quest.

Lt Colonel Brad,

Working the Gun Shows, I find them fairly regularly in small numbers. The real nice rifles are purchased by dealers, during the set-up hours before the public arrives. Get to the shows early. Good luck.

I've also stock piled a ton of C-Clips for mine. Can't have too many. You'll love it, But eight rounds go very quickly. I refinished my existing stock myself, It's a mixture of H&R, and Springfield parts. Plus a few un-identifiable parts. Great Rifle, coulden't not have one. CMP Rules!

I don't hunt, fish, or camp anymore so that makes all my rifles and shotguns, "target Guns". I can shoot the pulp right out of some paper, let me tell you.
