Fred, I have an FN Police Tactical Shotgun 12GA, and I can shoot rifled slugs through mine. You just have to screw the choke all the way in. 00 Buck is fine through mine as well.

Brigadier General Fred,
I don't find your question dumb at all. Actually, I think its a great question. 00 Buck is fine and will not damage your choke tube. Regarding slugs, at present, there are basically two types of slug ammunition available. Sabot-type ammo designs utilize relatively soft non-metallic sleeve that surrounds a smaller diameter slug projectile. Slug configurations and sabot designs vary with manufacturer. All sabot shells are based on the principle that the slug "sheds" the enclosing sabot in flight or on impact. Non-sabot ammo utilizes a bore-diameter slug projectile.

There are three different types of shotgun barrels through which slugs can be fired. The traditional smooth-bore with a screw-in rifled choke tube; or full-length rifled. In terms of ammo performance, it's the barrel that counts. The type of shotgun action is not significant for satisfactory performance, the type of slug ammunition you use needs to be matched to the type of barrel you are using.

A smooth-bore barrel does not spin the slug, so its range is limited. A smooth-bore barrel with a screw-in rifled choke is somewhat better because it will impart at least some stabilizing spin to a departing solid or sabot-design slug, and full-length-rifled barrels are best. The same reason why high-power rifles are not smooth-bore. In general terms, sabots are intended to be spun. The faster they spin, the better they work, the more stable the flight of the projectile they enclose and the more consistently they separate from the bullet. All types of slug ammo, sabot and non-sabot, provide their best accuracy and the longest effective range when fired in a full-rifle barrel. A smooth-bore barrel with rifled choke tube will be somewhat less accurate, and a pure smooth-bore offers the least accuracy. You can shoot all types of slugs in all types of barrels, but sabot shells in a smooth-bore will be less accurate at distance.

So does this mean the smooth-bore barrel is not as good as a full-rifle barrel? Not necessarily. It depends on what your particular circumstances are and the distance the shots are taken.

Good information General.....Thanks. Would you say that rifled slugs will damage my FN Police Tactical's choke? The gunsmith at my local shop said no.

I don't wanna watch mine blow out either. That would be a terrible waste of 600 bucks.

Your Gunsmith is correct.
I don't recommend having a Full Choke Tube threaded in the barrel.

The fact is, I have pulled the trigger many times firing 00 Buck and sabot-design slugs 'fruit salad' style, through my 870 with either an Improved or Skeet choke at silhouettes targets. My 870 is none worst for wear. Can't say the same for the silhouettes however... I do periodic checks to be certain the tube is tight. (unloaded w/ open chamber)

LOL at the unloaded w/open chamber advisement. The scary thing is that you felt the need to include it. Hard to believe anyone wouldn't automatically do that.
