what would cause the shell to jam in the barrel of the m4 after the round is fired.the bolt recoiled and the extractor ripped the back of the shell but the shell was stuck in the barrel. we had to use the cleaning rod and a hammer to get it out. |

Was you using a new brand of ammo? Maybe one with a thinner wall? I seen extracters rip and gouge a casing, but nothing like you're talking. Let us know what you find out. I like to use surplus 5.56 military because they have thicker walls than the commercal stuff. |

The shell case is bulged or the ammo has lacquered coated cases. If your firing ammo that is lacquer coated, and the rifle is fired very hot, this lacquer will act like an adhesive between the cartridge case and the rifles chamber, making feeding and extraction extremely difficult. I don't think there is any thing wrong with the extractor as it ripped the base of the cartridge. If the extractor was bad, it will have a weak buffer and spring that jumps the rim of the case, instead of extracting it. Soak the rifle's chamber end in a quality solvent. After giving it time to penetrate, I would use a coated rod with a good bore brush and attach a section of rod to a variable speed hand drill. Then(from the chamber end only) at very slow rpm speed carefully clean the breach to a polish finish. Do not do this from the muzzle end. Good luck.
