A bill was signed making March 29 Vietnam Veterans Day in Minnesota. Vietnam War veterans are getting a long-awaited "Welcome home" from their state government. The Governor signed it into law designating March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day. Minnesota follows Tennessee as the only states to designate a special day for veterans of that war. It was shameful soldiers from that conflict didn't get a hero's reception upon returning from war. I want to go on record that Minnesota and nation did not properly express our gratitude at the time. It is a fact that General Vo Nguyen Giap. A brilliant, highly respected leader of the North Vietnam military, wrote in his memoirs... "What we still don't understand is why the Americans stopped the bombing of Hanoi. They had us on the ropes and if the Americans had pressed harder, just for another day or two, we were ready to surrender! It was the same at the battles of TET. Americans defeated us! We knew it, and we fought them knowing it. But we were elated to notice the American media was definitely helping us. They were causing more disruption in America than we could in the battlefields. We were ready to surrender. The American Army had won!" General Giap has published his memoirs and confirmed what most Americans knew. The Vietnam war was not lost by our troops in Vietnam, HELL NO -- it was lost at home. This newly designated Vietnam Veterans Day -- the first of which was yesterday -- will put the focus on the sacrifices of those veterans. The date was chosen because the last U.S. ground troops left the Asian country on March 29, 1973. Roughly 147,000 Minnesotans served in the Vietnam War and 1,072 died. A total 58,193 U.S. Military Personnel Died. Some might say it was in A truism worthy of note: Do not fear the enemy, for they can take only your life. Fear the media far more, for they will destroy your honor. |
