Is Russian ammo really bad for your weapons? How bad?

On the negative side - Most of the Russian cartridges have a steel case which can't be reloaded. The case is covered with a lacquer that when heated leaves the case and transfers to the action of your firearm. The powder burns dirty. Be careful not to buy ammo that has corrosive primers. Old surplus ammo may contain this type of primer.

On the positive side - It is inexpensive. My opinion, you get what you pay for.

I have used and still use some Russian ammo in my AK. What Chaindriven says is correct about the primers and very dirty powder, but, I can assure you that if you clean your gun thoroughly shortly after using you will be ok. But, some folks I know do not clean their AK's for a week or so following firing. I never do that, it isn't worth the price just in case I have ammo that burns way to dirty. And, yes, Chaindriven is also correct in that the Russian ammo is dirt cheap in comparison to American ammo for my AK. So, the alternative is to use Russian ammo and clean my weapon right after shooting.
