The best by what definition ? My personal favourites are/were (in no particular order) P/H .303 brit' (later becoming .308 nato), Dragunov 7.62x54, and the M14 .308 and of course the 8mm Mauser ,All very reliable, accurate, and long serving rifles for standard anti personel applications. |

thanks for reminding sir... also one of my favorite is the SVD (dragunov) and also the walther wa2000.... walther is an accurate rifle with less recoil... you can easily put rounds down range... NO GUNS, NO GLORY!!! |

The Chey Tec .408 is a serious weapon also. I'd say it deserves mention. Barrett also has a new rifle chambered in .416 that is accurate out to 2500 yards. The .50BMG does have a serious advantage when it comes to vehicle immobilization though. |

It also needs to be said... To all the wannabe's , Think about the differences in type of work between "Sniper" and "SharpShooter" , and the purpose of the weapons used. Also There is nothing new about .50 cal rifles, they've been in & out of use for decades as anti tank/material rifles. |

Jack, who was your "wannabe" comment directed towards? That's the first negative remark I've seen on any forum of this site. Don't you think your points would be better served as advice rather than criticism, or do you not care whether others benefit from the knowledge you may possess? If it's the latter, then I'll ignore your future input in the forum. |

Gentlemen, I honor both of you with a sharp salute. Jack, to you sir for acknowledging the fact this forum must stand firm and reprimand those who would provide fuel to the anti-gun left. Brad, to you for commending him. "Those who willingly give up freedom for temporary safety deserve neither freedom or safety" |

Have you looked at the AI rifle or the Sig Blase 338 Lapua? They are shooting better groups than the 50 cal. |

Add away Jack. Thanks to all for the positive comments. Stan, most of the rifles I've seen chambered in .338 Lapua are excellent shooters. They definitely deserve mention. Sig's version is a great example, as are those made by Armalite (AR-30) and Sako. |

It would be hard to pick a best sniper rifle. A lot of good choices for sniping, counter sniping, or designated marksman, for shooting and target discipline duty. But, for price, availability, shooter comfort, power curve, and reasonable accuracy, the Armalite 30 in .338 Lapua, gets my vote. |
