Which is beter quality/more reliable/ suitable for home defense?

I'm talking about the Mossberg 500 vs the Rem. police model/riot gun (I believe it's the model 1200).

One bit to throw in. Between the Remington 870 and the Mossberg 500. The Remington has a steel receiver versus the Mossberg 500 is aluminum. I will not say which one is better to avoid a flame war, they are both good and readily available everywhere. I like the increased weight of the 870 as it absorbs a "little" bit more recoil than its lighter competitor. Just something else to consider.

I have used both, the Mossberg 590 (the military model of the 500)and the Rem 870 and as said by others there is not much between them, but I went with the 590, for less money than the 870 I got a 9 shot 590 with ghost ring sights. I used the 590 in AF Special Ops without a single problem.

Ive got the Remington 870 Experess in 20ga. for dove hunting and its a great gun. it has very little recoil, and its reliable. im not sayin its better than the Mossberg either, but its a very good gun.

Remington and Mossberg both make a quality weapon. Remington tends to run a little more expensive. I am not aware of a Remington 1200. (However, there is a Winchester 1200 semiauto). Remington does make an 1100 auto and an 11/87 auto, both of which can come in several tactical models. The Remington 870 is the pump model (also available in tactical configurations) which is probably more equivalent to the Mossberg 500, also a pump.
I think it's mostly a matter of preference as I don't feel that equivalent models are sufficiently different in price or quality to warrent settling for a second choice. Personally, for defense, I tend to favor pump guns which generally require less or simpler maintenance. They are also, imho, less prone to failure, a big plus when facing off with an armed agressor.

I solved my problem when it came to deciding, I bought a Winchester 1300 Marine stainless defender. Great piece of firepower if you ask me.

I'd rather go hunting with Dick, than driving with Ted:

I've had to repair a 870 that was dropped from over 2,000 ft wich consisted of replacing the wooden forend and the pistol grip and said shotgun was ready for the fight. In my opinion a mossberge would have went to the trash can. I've worked with both for over 20 years and would say that the 870 is the best choice for the long term even if you don't drop them out of airplains.

The way I see it is the Remington is a Browning with a different name.

LIVE FREE OR DIE.
I like the 870 I have one in 20 16 and 12. I bought one for my son when he joined the Houston pd. They want you to have a 870 or not at all.

as far as im concerned they are both equal in terms of reliability but the mossberg has superior safety/slide release placement and it wont tear your thumb up during reloads .........and the mossberg is cheaper so you decide .

the answer is clear .....the mossberg is a better weapon ! ohh and 1 more thing ...... i challenge anybody here to stand 10 feet from me with a rem 870 with a loaded round and safety on ......... buzzer sounds you switch off the safety and fire ...... i will blow you away with my moss500 ..... those critical seconds you loose while fumbling with your remington 870's safety may cause you your life someday
