Hey all,
I want to pick up some sort of assault rifle this summer, but havn't the slightest clue as to what I should buy. I've only shot the AK-47 as far as assault rifles are concerned, but to be honest I didn't like it all that much because it jammed a bunch of times. I don't know if this was because the guy who had it was a schmuck or because of the gun. I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks.

Wow an AK jammed? I'm guessing you want a semi automatic version of an assault rifle. An assault rifle is a weapon that has selective fire. I love the FN Fal series of rifles. AR 15s are popular. it really depends on what your looking for. A weapon just for fun, or a weapon for competition shooting, or even some longer than average range self defense.

Well you can never go wrong with an AR-15, lots of cool gadgets you can put on them. But there Are plenty more exotic rifles out there like the FS2000 from FN.

I'm looking for something to have fun with for now until I get a little more skilled. My goal is to eventually get into competition shooting, but for now I want something that is going to be fun but also ballsy. Thanks

I've done comertition shooting with my assault riffle. I have a Steyr Aug and it has never let me down yet. It's robust, reliable and priced quite fairly. It's also a great weapon to fire, it feels comfortable, it looks good and it's fun. I've fired a few weapons being in the millitary and i chose the Aug as the weapon above the rest and if you want that little bit extra something then opt for the Steyr Aug A3 and you will never be bored or disapointed.

Is it suposed to twitch like that

If you can your best bet would be to try and find a firearms dealer with a shooting range you could go to and try a bunch of different guns to find something that you like personally. but my suggestion would be an AR-15 but thats just me.

It seemes to be if it's fun your after then any of the .223 rifles out there will fit the bill, it's up to you on how much you want to spend and if your looking to go in to compertion shooting which rifle is going to have you complete faith.

I've spent alot of time useing SKS's and they're as good as anything for wasting ammo down range. Again a cheep, reliable rifle, & with decent ammo will group 4 or 5 inches at the 100 mark.
A friend of mine has just bought an AK style Saiga in 223 cal' and he's lovin it.

Ak-47 jammed? that's not common on those. I've never had it happen but then
I do take care of my guns. I am not a real big fan of AR-15's but they are
easy to shoot and easily more accurate. As a 'Nam vet, I have used the M-16 full Auto version. Mine never failed me but you have to keep them clean.
The AK47 was more reliable and good at close range. For more than 75 yards I'd much prefer the AR15.

Yes. they all do that. The secret is to pull it tight to the shoulder, keep your elbows tucked in and pull the fore end grip to the right and towards you in order to remove any free play from the components. this ensures that your grouping remains tight. 3" groups from 300mtrs is considered good enough.
Interestingly enough. Steyrs are good for 100,000 rnds before material failure of the stock assembly takes place. ultrasonic welding will only take so much shock loading before it folds.
hope this info is relevent and/or useful.

ASSAULT RIFLE denotes a fully automatic capability.
Unless you have a Class3 license you cannot have a real assault rifle.

All of the rifles that are of Military lineage that are available to the common citizen are all semi-automatic..

Soldiers use assault weapons (fully automatic)
They wouldn't be caught dead with a semi automatic rifle.

That is a great misnomer concerning the word Assault.
I saw a huge video concerning this terminology and how it has damaged the gun loving community.

i am curious what is your problem with it? I own one with a trijicon ACOG and love it, but then again to me the only great rifle is a bullpup.

In this country we use the term "Military Style Semi Automatic" .
And yes I've been associated with the army for a considerable time and there's nothing wrong with taking single or double taps on Semi Auto especially when on a long patrol and you dont have backup.

I have limited experience with assult rifles, but, I have first hand knowledge on an AK47. I purchased a brand new Romanian AK a few weeks ago at a gun show, and it had all the bells and whistles already on it. I have sighted it in and man, it is very accurate and I have had not one wimper or problem with it.
