Seems like everytime I buy a firearm, I say "That should be enough for awhile." Then sure enough, within a week I've already got my sights on another "goodie." Sure isn't as cheap as stamp collecting. But damn it's fun.

I'd rather go hunting with Dick, than driving with Ted:

Just got a new Barrett .50 on Wednesday and a Ruger MkIII with integral supressor from my daughters about a week ago. They'll be down to the ranch on the 25th to help break in the new stuff. I got them some steel too. One gets an old broom handled Mauser .9mm Para with holster/stock the other gets a Mac 11 in .380 with a can. We are going to have some fun after dinner! Ya'll drop by, the door is always open. JD
Life is short, THIS IS NOT A DRILL!

Wow, you got me on that one? AS for the christmas gift, my Dad loved it. He has not had a gun sice he was in the military in the late 60's early 70's. He did great at the range. If you can handle the recoil of a snub nose .38, the .38 is an excellent defense round. If you know how to shoot and where to put the bullets, 5 rounds is better than "spray in pray" with an auto. I prefer carrying an auto but I sometimes will carry my .38 as a back-up piece or something I can just throw in my back pocket. A .38 with +P loads is just as effective as a 9mm and way better than a .380, .32acp, etc., so to say the .38 is "ONE of the WORST" guns you can buy for someone, maybe if you dont know much about them.

I am going to have to agree with you on this on TannarDog....my roommate has a .38 snub nose smith that Ive been trying to buy of him for about a year now.

My wife has a "Lady Smith" 38 and she adores it. I agree with TannerDog, a 38, even a non +P round, in the right hands, can be as potent as any other round. A well placed 22 LR is far more effective that a .500 S&W fired blindly in the general direction (barring being blinded by the muzzle flash). If we were to use the general logic (?) of many people nowdays, a 12 gauge slug gun would be the only ideal defensive weapon. Size does make a difference in some instances, but it's not the truest measure of a great caliber, or gun. Everyone has different tastes, preferences, abilities, and needs.
But I know this is an arguement that will continue long after I've turned to mere dust, just like the Chevy/Ford, or PC/Mac, or great taste/less filling arguements. No one is wrong, no is right. Everyone has their own preference.

For those who have read any of Steven Covey books, he has an analogy of a guy who goes to the Dr. stating everything is blurry. The Dr. hands him his own glasses, and asks him "Try these." The guy puts them on, and says "Things are worse." Th Dr. grabs the glasses back and says in a huffy manner, "I don't know what your problem is, they work great for me."
