The Rock River Arms Varmint A4 as the name suggests is basically a hunting rifle. Varmint rifles are designed for shooting small prey like coyotes and hares and are not normally associated with long range, precision sniping. But such rifles make perfect sense when the range is short and power is not an issue. Rock River Arms has a great reputation for manufacturing quality firearms and the Varmint A4 is attempts to live up to it.
The RRA Varmint A4 comes in 4 different models with the only difference being the length of the barrel. These are the 16', 18', 20' and 24' barrels and the length determines the effective range of the rifle. The Varmint A4 features a Wilson Heavy contour stainless steel barrel that is .92' at the muzzle. It also has a full length A2 butt-stock with free-floating aluminum handgaurds. The hand-guard comes with a Hogue rubber grip that is extremely comfortable. He fit between the upper and lower in this rifle is clean and though the bolt carrier and the upper are standard the overall finishing in this rifle is excellent quality. The trigger is the RRA NM standard two-stage competition trigger, which is extremely smooth, and the transition between the stages is fluid. It requires a pull of about 4.5 lbs. The rifle is available with a winter trigger guard that facilitates handling with gloved hands.
The Varmint A4 uses .223 Rem. Ammunition out of standard AR-15 detachable magazines. Since the A4 comes with the Wylde chambering, it can easily accommodate 5.56 x 45 mm NATO ammunition. Though rifles chambered for 5.56 mm rounds can safely fire .223 Rem ammunition, the converse is usually quite dangerous. The Wylde chamber in the A4 allows the rifle to use both kinds of ammunition safely.
The rifle comes with a scope mounting which allows for various different scopes to be used with it. Accuracy for the rifle using 75 and 80 gr ammunition is considered to be sub MOA.
