All through the history of man, he has tried to conquer his environment, animals and his fellow man for dominance of the earth’s resources. This has led to titanic battles that have led to everything from minor skirmishes, to full blown war. The tools of conflict have always been weapons, which aspire to give one side in a conflict the upper hand over the other, by killing and maiming as many of the enemy’s members as possible. Gradually through time, weapons have evolved from simple killing devices to large, mechanical purveyors of death. Following is the top ten deadliest weapons list, from prehistoric times, to today.
• Spears were the tenth deadliest of man’s weapons, ostensibly for food hunting. Over time, more uses were found for the spear, such as settling differences between prehistoric communities. They were made out of a wooden stick with a stone pointed edge, and in later years, a metallic pointed head.
• Number nine on the list of the top ten worlds deadliest weapons, is the invention of gunpowder, in ancient China. In the Kai-Keng battle of 1232, Chinese troops leveled the field against a far superior Mongol army, in terms of numbers, with their dreaded ‘fire arrows’, laced with gunpowder on one end and shot at the enemy, shortly after being lit.
• Eighth on the list is the initial foray into fighter aircraft, the Vickers FB5 Gun bus. This aircraft began service for the British Military just before the onset of the First World War, and leading the allied forces to significant victories in Europe. This fighter aircraft heralded the importance of airborne might in future conflicts.
• The crossbow, for its lethal combination of ease of use and accuracy, as used by armies in the middle ages put it to effective use especially during the Crusades, which led to victorious campaigns for the Europeans, as number seven in the top ten deadliest weapons.
• The Maxim gun enters the list at number six, for it was the first truly effective machine gun. It was self-powered, and let out five hundred rounds a minute, and was first used on a large scale in the British Empire’s scramble for Africa.
• At number five is the feared U-boat, a German World War Two submarine, which was used on stalking missions around the Atlantic Ocean, and these deadly weapons confined France to Axis hands in 1940.
• At number four in the top ten deadliest weapons, is radar technology. Not a conventional weapon as such, it changed the tide of the Second World War by giving the Allies advanced warnings of enemy gun ships, and submarines.
• At number three is the nuclear bomb, which not only ended the Second World War, but also entered the United States and the Soviet Union into an arms race that lasted the next thirty years.
• The top two in the top ten deadliest weapons of all time are started of with ICBMs, or intercontinental ballistic missiles, which are able of boosting nuclear bombs across continents. Horded by both the Soviets and the Americans, this was the defining military feature of the Cold War between the two superpowers.
• Therefore, the number one in the top ten deadliest weapons is the Abram’s M1 tank, which led the United States to swift victory during desert Storm in the Persian Gulf in the early nineties.
