Choosing the right gun ammunition

The type of ammunition that you purchase for your gun will always come down to two distinct questions which are both closely related:

• How is the gun going to be used?
• What are you going to shoot with the gun?

These are questions you will need to answer before choosing the right gun ammunition and making your purchase. Naturally, the first place you will want to look is the internet for finding the types of ammunition that is available. Calibers, grains, shapes and sizes, tips, and types, will all vary. Each product has its own particular advantages and disadvantages. Basically, there is as much to educate yourself about when it comes to choosing the right gun ammunition as you have the time for learning.

Here are a few helpful tips when it comes to choosing the right gun ammunition, taking the hunting scenario into consideration rather than just simple handgun, shotgun, or rifle shooting and target practice are concerned.

Tip #1 – Determine where you are going to be hunting. Location has a lot to do with determining where you will be hunting since certain geographical areas are better suited to your quarry, while other areas may carry restrictions as to whether or not hunting is legal in the area.

Tip #2 – Determine what your quarry is going to be. Personal preference, the desire to bring home a trophy (relative to antlers), your tastes in cuisine, etc. are all things that you should consider.

Tip #3 – Choose your weapon based on the animal you will be hunting. Rifles are always better for power and precision shooting, while shotguns (with their spray of buckshot), are the choice for flying targets. This will make it easier on you when it comes to choosing the right gun ammunition.

Tip #4 – Decide on the cartridge weight and caliber that you will be shooting. For example, you may want to go with a smaller and faster bullet like a .223 or a .270 at about 130 grains if you are going to be firing clear shots of 100 yards or more. Typically, these bullets cover more distance and are faster.

Tip #5 – After you choose the type of bullet you want, make your purchase. As another example, if you are trying to decrease the amount of bodily damage while increasing the lethality, then you would consider a hollow-point bullet when choosing the right gun ammunition.

Finally, here are some helpful hints and warnings for choosing the right gun ammunition and using your weapon:

• The skin of your prey should be taken into consideration. The higher the caliber, the larger and slower the projectile whereas low-caliber bullets are faster and smaller, and can penetrate the skin of the prey easier.

• The larger the bullet, the more your weapon will kick

• Some counties in the US only allow the use of hollow-points

• Remember that your weapon is loaded and treat it as though it could discharge at any time, for any reason.

• Know your ammunition and your weapon. The more knowledgeable you are, the safer you will be.
